VHF Radio

This course is mandatory for anybody wishing to use a marine VHF radio. It is, therefore, an essential requirement for all skippers of recreational craft.
Pre-work
- Prior to attending the course we will send you a VHF pack. You must complete 3 hours of self study.
Day 1
- Introduction to VHF/DSC (Digital Selective Calling) radios
- MMSI numbers (Marine Mobile Service Identity)
- Distress, Urgency, Safety and Routine calls using dummy radios and computer simulation
- Procedure words and key phrases
- GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System):- Epirbs, Sarts, Navtex, AIS
- Mayday and Mayday relay

Day 2
- An RYA examiner will give you a practical assessment on the training radios followed by a multiple choice examination.
On successful completion you will be given a form to complete and send to the RYA. They will then issue your Short Range Certificate. You will need to bring a passport photo to attach to the form along with a cheque payable to the Royal Yachting Association for £60. You can also pay by debit card.

- Course fee £130 (cash or cheque - includes VHF pack and lunch)
- RYA fee £60 (cheque or debit card)
