Sail Training 2006 - 25th April 2006

Sail Training 2006 sees 5 classes on the river - 25th April 2006

The sheer quantity of boats on the river for the first sail training day of 2006 spoke volumes about the quality of the organisation of this year's sessions. There were Toppers in all colours (including the new pink-tops) Merlins (mostly new to the club this season) Wayfarers (both new and old), Leaders and Fireflies, not to mention a number of safety boats helmed by some of the many TSC volunteers.Toppers

Last Saturday was perfect for the first day of the course: warm sunshine, and light Zephyrs. The young beginners made exceptional progress under Patrick Rayner's inspired guidance, the more experienced youngsters had an excuse to get back into the river (quite literally as it turned out), and the adults were able to build up enough confidence to look forward to steadier winds next time.

I secured an exclusive interview with Sally Reed (Chief Sailing Instructor) and David Lowrie...

Jason - "How did the course go last Saturday" (Inspired question!)
Sally - "My sense of elation and pride at the success of the sail training at TSC has reached the highest level ever! This is because David Lowrie has earned the gratitude of everyone at the club by gaining his RYA Senior Instructor award, at the same time as doing the nightmare job of taking all the bookings, mustering resources, and allocating staff to jobs. It is just wonderful for me to be able to step back onto the sidelines, and just get on with teaching one group at a time. Thank you David, and all of the new team of volunteers."TRaining2006

Jason - "Any Comments?" (Fleet Street here I come!)
David - "How incredibly embarrassing!"

Having completed this same course last year I'm looking forward to the new recruits adding to the already growing fleet of regular sailors at the club on both Tuesday evenings and Sundays. I'd better get some practice in!

Jason Mullins.
