The Summer Party

The weekend of Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th June is one of the season highlights at the TSC featuring the great China Bowl series and Cadet Paddle sailing regatta. There will be sailing for all and on the Saturday night, the annual Summer Party which this year will take place in the sail shed.

BBQ food will be provided by ex Commodore Justin Dunn who has been "volunteered" to assist again this year. Dancing to the band as described below by my contact (not sure how my daughters Phd in modern Brazilian Art ends up with her knowing about, and attending so many Latin American parties!!)

"Se chama Saravah Soul" are best described by musos as James Brown meets Jorge Ben. They are basically a Brazilian / English band playing blues and jazzy stuff with a lot of Latin American thrown in - sound really great. They fill a big club in Covent Garden at regular gigs.

The bar will be manned by VIcky in the sail shed - brilliant!

This is a big event for the Club so lets make it a really good one - if every member brings one visitor we can fill the sail sheds and have a great evening.

Paul Browning is co-coordinating the tickets so contact him or me, or Suzie Scotcher - tickets are £16 and £8 for under 18's

And Friday evening, anyone who is able please come to the club to help set up - we will be doing a takeaway Ruby Murray at about 9.00pm and there may be a small ale taken!

And finally, for anyone left standing on Sunday, the China Bowl regatta continues with ploughman’s lunches available, and club sailing as well.

Sounds to me like a pretty full weekend for everyone -

Stuart Gurney, Vice Commodore

Ladies Race

This coming weekend sees the occasion of the annual Ladies race. The usual 2 races starts will take place in the morning for both Rater and Handicap classes. The first race, as the first of the Summer Series, can be helmed by either sex but the ladies in the know use this as a practice run. The second race is the ladies race and therefore only helms of the fairer sex can compete. Crew can be either male or female (women’s clothing is optional for male participants).

Cream Teas will be served after the ladies race.

China Bowl

The two-day series of races to win the China Bowl is now one of the most eagerly contested events in the whole rater calendar, with almost all the rater 'hotshots' competing.  Curiously, for such a fine trophy, little is known about its origins, although it was first raced for in 1930.  Incidentally, the trophy is silver not China - the 'China' in the title refers to the ornate designs on the bowl.  It is made of Chinese high grade silver with no stamp and of native manufacture.

Subject to conditions this year’s event will consists of a 6 race series held over the Saturday and Sunday as follows: -

 - Three back to backs on the Saturday (24th June) First Start 13:30.
 - Three back to backs on Sunday (25th June) First start 10:30

Calling all under 18’s! The Cadet Paddle

The Cadet Paddle is not a paddling event! The Paddle referred to is the paddle pictured which hangs in the club and is engraved with the names of past winners.  The Cadet paddle is the premier annual competition for the Cadet members of the club. This year it will comprise 3 short races with the first start at midday on Saturday (24th June). This is a handicap event so cadets can compete in any dinghy.

Sin in Sin City

The Bourne End Regatta team has asked us to point out that there are still Tents and Caravans in Sin City. These need to be cleared out by this coming weekend to conform to planning conditions.

It was lovely, but it’s over…move on!

Call for Articles

The next edition of Grapevine is due out in July. We therefore require all articles to be submitted by the end of June. We’ve had some great events so far this year so if you fancy writing a report drop Negla a line. Also we would love to consider any of your favorite photos taken at any of this year’s events for publication in Grapevine.

Evine and Grapevine
If you’re thinking of submitting something to E-vine or Grapevine here’s a bit of clarification about what goes in which.

E-vine is primarily a vehicle to notify or remind members about upcoming events and to bring notices of immediate importance to the membership as a whole. In order for events to qualify they should fulfill the following criteria: -

 - They need to be submitted in time for the next issue of e-vine. In order not to inundate the membership with news items we are strictly maintaining a monthly issue (copy usually needs to be in by the end of the previous month).

 - The events need to be club events that have been approved by the committee

 - The event needs to be open to the whole membership (exceptions may be made at the discretion of the committee).

All articles and reports on events past, musings, poetry, artwork, letters to the editor etc should be aimed squarely at Grapevine

Club Boats for Hire

The Sailing Committee (with the approval of the general committee) has introduced a formal policy regarding the use of club owned boats by TSC members.  Under the policy the Committee introduced a formal charge, to replace the system of voluntary donations, for the use of club boats by adult members.

The charges are as follows:

Optimist            -           £2.00 per session

Topper              -           £2.00 per session

Leader              -           £5.00 per session

Wayfarer           -           £5.00 per session

Please note cadet (junior) members are exempt from these charges and new members are entitled to an initial 5 free sessions. Please also note that the charges are per boat not per person . Also, a day is defined as consisting of two sessions, a morning session and an afternoon/evening session i.e. if you were to sail in a Wayfarer/Leader for a full day (two sessions) then the charge levied would be £10.00.

In the short-term, adult members using the club boats should place the appropriate payment in the donation tin in the Race Box.  Monies raised under the charging policy will be used to maintain the club owned fleet of boats.
