Thames Sailing ClubLady Jane, Vagabond and Osprey shared the club Rater series spoils and, although Ian and Susie continued to dominate the Handicap series, there were many more contenders this year with series trophies also being awarded to Nick Hoskins, Brian Hepburn, Stuart Gurney and Ben and Nicole. It was particularly pleasing to see Tom Hamilton relinquished of the tray of drinks he was serving to collect the Stowell
Cup and Harry Jacobs Cigar Box to add to the Cadet paddle previously awarded. For full details of the awards see 2007 awards sheet.
The nibbles just kept coming and the champagne kept flowing. No surprises then that the excellent rock n' roll band, Big Al and the Fireflys had everyone twisting and jiving. The evening continued for the hardcore few with a marathon Karaoke session well into the early hours. To see more of the pictures they didn't want published go to Mel's Flickr site. As ever an event like the prize-giving only happens as a result of the usually unsung efforts of many individuals. Usually the cast is so large that a blanket ‘Thank you’ has to suffice. Negla who coordinated and actually did far more than her fair share of the actual doing would like this time to thank those whose time and effort helped her to avoid total personal meltdown. (Ed)
First there’s the staff from the night itself including the junior members who served the nibbles and drinks; Emma & Paris Wells, Sabrine Razik, Tom Hamilton, Will Carpenter and Daisy Tennant-Thomas. The professional staff on the night were: Jeanette, her daughter Rebecca, Latzi, Timmi, Thomas and Judy.
As ever the big stars were the members who gave freely of their time in the run up to the event. These include:-
Melanie, Melanie and Melanie - every night for the last week and all day Friday when she should have been at work, she procrastinated with me; shopped; cooked; was sympathetic when I couldn't stop crying and never asked why.
Suze - what can I say? What a wonderful sailing secretary she is. The evening would not have had the class, poise and dignity without her trophies/ her results/ her awards/ her hard work/ her wonderful Ian / and her fabulous dress.
Tony - also had to tolerate my tears. He did everything that I should have asked for over the last 6 months in 48 hours. He was an absolute angel, and we shared a fag or two setting everything up, and pondering over the meaning of life.
Stu - the Vice. Brought and spent 2 evenings erecting his magnificent marquee for the entrance. He didn't need persuading - he just did it with help from the two boys above and below. All this in the middle of organising for his trip to Seattle the following morning. And then brought along the coat rails - what a life saver they were on that rainy evening.
Andy, the commie - organised the buying of 140 champagne glasses at bargain price; assisted with balcony cover and marquee; organised the return of the trophies; agreed and organised the fixing of the car park lights (with the trusty hero Sam) - would have been hopeless without them; and didn't say 'no' once in the preceding 2 weeks!
Phillis, got me out of trouble when I left organising the flowers too late. Phil continues to get me out of trouble on a regular basis.
Sue W, organised the twinkling lights, all night Thursday and Friday. And the Hunter came along and was charming about the cheese straws.
Chris M, what a sweetie, kept dropping in every time he was passing by - to carry something, lend a helping hand and say something profoundly cheerful.
the whole general committee, after a stressful meeting 72 hours earlier, cleared the clubhouse in one fell swoop; such strong, capable boys and girls we have.
Everyone that helped move the dinosaur sideboard on the preceding Tuesday night. Everyone that was there helped, without exception.
Paul A our wonderful bar sec. Spent the preceding 2 weeks collecting ice to chill the champagne, on top of all the other prep. and extra orders.
Ossie - offered his electric heaters; tracked them down and brought them over to heat up the balcony. He was moving house at the time and still managed to fit that in.
Jeanette over and above the call of duty. Came early and left late.
Nick Hoskins - noticed my distress and put my Firefly away for me, taking down the mast
and storing the hull dry and warm. By the way, where is it Nick?
Gill - steered the catering; she didn't come, and we missed her so much.
Richard Munday drew on his extensive knowledge to advise me on where to get the champagne without getting hauled in for tax fraud.
Patrick - thought it would be a good idea to get some coat hangers for the rails - how right he was.
Veronica and Sheena and David - for being as stubborn as I was from way back when it was just a thought!
and that's not all - all the people that bought tickets; all the people that made it so wonderful on the night (Ben have you let go that karaoke microphone yet?); all the people that have been so sweet and complementary since then; all the people that can't wait till next time.

It was one of those memorable evenings that we will be talking about for quite some while (those that can remember much of it that is!). As you can see these events can only happen with the involvement of many. We would love to see more members getting involved and the roll call above demonstrates that you don’t have to over-commit yourself to make a valuable and much appreciated contribution. So please step up to the mark in the New Year and pledge your help either generally or specifically to a particular activity to which you are particularly suited or to a particular event. Please help us to make the club buzz in 2008! (Ed)
