Thames Sailing Club
This was a day of firsts. The sun was shining and it was warm. The wind was a genuine TSC variable with occasional gusts of half a knot.
The Race organisers showed some mercy by setting a modest X course. After half an hour’s struggle against the stream by the fleet comprised of an Albacore, Merlin, Firefly, Solo and Wayfarer the Officer of the Day decided that if the boats could not reach the mark then, for the first time this season, the mark ought to be brought nearer to the boats! This enabled Brian Hepburn in his Solo, after he placed himself in the best position to make use of a lift, to round the top mark first and romp home a clear winner.
The second race saw Dave McCormack out in his recently acquired
Albacore 'Mudshark' giving Ben & Nicole a run for their money. Is this a first to have two Albacores at TSC? Nick Hoskins also made an appearance in his newly acquired Merlin. Nick’s tactics of sticking to the Middx bank paid off despite his joining two others in doing a ‘360 degree’ for hitting the top mark in the first lap. His lead was confirmed when he rounded the mark and drifted clear of the rest of the fleet to take a first for the race and the regatta.
Our new Sailing Sec., Suzie Scotcher, was in good form not least because at the end of an excellent four course luncheon, organised by Sue Williams and Martin Hunter, she was able to announce the overall winner. The ‘first’ was the fact that the results had been calculated on the Club’s new ‘go-faster’ laptop computer using, for the first time, a new handicap/scoring program devised and created by Jason Mullins.
Thanks were passed to Paul and Karen for their efforts in the Box and to Sue and Martin for their veritable feast with a touching Easter theme.
Despite the frustrations of weak wind and notable tide everyone felt the day had been excellent.
