fireflyopenFirefly Open 2007

Saturday the 14th April saw the second annual Firefly Open to be held at Thames. In complete contrast to last year (squalls, capsizes, driving rain) the day was lightly breezy and sunny throughout. Competing this year were a dozen or so local Fireflies (mostly Thames and Tamesis based) of all vintages, plastic and wooden, sail numbers from our own vintage 18 and 19 (helmed by cadet members) to more modern examples in the late three thousands.

spot the odd one out!The course was set round Ravens Ait and three races were run, each of around 1 hour. Throughout the day the racing was tight; leads changed hands frequently as the boats bunched up at the marks and stretched out again on the tacks. Due to our new race calculation system we in the box could monitor the result of the whole day during the last race, as each boat finished a lap, which added a little to the excitement, at least for us!

A number of start line transgressions and some course issues led to some DQs, but in all the racing was fun and furious, if not all that fast.
