Martin Hunter won both the Braganza Bowl and the Yates Cup for the second year in succession in Spindrift (14) in a 12 boat fleet at the open meeting for Thames A Raters at Tamesis on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 September. He ended the six race series counting three firsts and two seconds for the best five of the races after discarding a sixth in the final race. The Yates Cup was contested in the third race.
Andrew Christie, the Rater Captain, said it was a very energetic week-end. The starts were very congested but the fleet was generally well behaved after the few bumps and holing of the week-end before. There was, of course, the usual polite and frank exchange of words in the heat of battle. On the Sunday the wind direction had changed and increased in strength. The course was lengthened, with the top mark just below the railway bridge at Kingston. This made for very close racing, particularly between the Steven's Eyot and the Middlesex bank. Martin Hunter was given a run for his money by Julian Smith in Atlantis (15). Osprey (16), helmed over much of the week-end by Graham Bartholomew, was also challenging strongly.
The best racing was on Sunday when a brisk southerly wind gave a good beat up river but there was warm sunshine on both days, although the wind was light on Saturday. Forty five people enjoyed the traditional Rater dinner on Saturday evening when the meal was cooked by Tamesis Commodore Peter Mason and Rear Commodore Steve Katz.
