Thames Sailing ClubThe Rater Association did well to meet for the Rater AGM on the 18th November following the festivities the preceding evening. Following Andy Christie's resignation announcement, Paul Armitage was voted in as the new Rater Captain with Justin Dunn taking the post of vice. The following is Andy Christie's last report as Rater Captain
I can report another great season for the “Raters” this year.
Our four key events, - Bourne End, China Bowl, Vintage Regatta and Braganca Bowl. All went well with the exception of the Vintage Regatta which wasn’t completed due to general flooding and exceptional stream.
Entries were up with 16 at Bourne End and 12 at the Braganca Bowl.
Martin Hunter and “Spindrift” was pretty dominant during the season but didn’t have it all his own way with Jonathan Smith taking the “Queens Cup” and Julian Smith winning the “China Bowl”.
The standard of racing continues to improve in the fleet. It is encouraging to see our younger helms Bess Rhodes and Sam Christie making great progress particularly towards the end of the season.
It is with regret that the ever competitive crew of “Lady Iona” (Brian Hepburn, Martin Grounds and Philip Spreadborough) are retiring. On behalf of the class we thank them for all their efforts over the years and wish them well for the future.
On the social side it has been a good year. The “Queens Cup” supper was a full house and the food provided by Anne and Lou was great. We thank Upper Thames for a first class evening and putting up with us.Tamesis provided us with a dinner for the “Braganca Bowl” cooked by none other than their Flag Officers. The Rater lunch was its usual lively affair and was well attended
This is my last year as Rater Captain and I can say that I have thoroughly enjoyed doing the job.
My only parting message to the class is that it is incumbent on us all to encourage others to join us in this great fleet. Raters are not like other classes. So we need to take out potential new members out on our boats often to encourage them to join in this great tradition.
Andrew Christie
Outgoing Rater Captain.
