Events Coming up in March

Sunday 11th March @ 13.00 - Encouraging Participation - Session 2

The second session will take the form of a workshop to identify how volunteer management best practice , as defined by Jackie Bennett of the RYA, can be applied within the TSC.

We would encourage all members to attend even if you did not manage to make the first session.

We particularly need all officers and club post holders to attend as one primary aim of this workshop is to find ways to 'spread the load'.

So if you’re attending the Rater association meeting anyway, please come along early and support this initiative.

Negla and the team will be providing a buffet lunch to nibble during the session.

Sunday 18th March @ 11.30 am - Safety Boat re-floating

Volunteers are required to help put the rescue boats into the water including Cora and at least one Dory. Easy with many hands making light work.

Sunday 18th March @ 1.30 pm - Introduction to The Computerised Race Scoring System

Our resident computer genius Jason Mullins has managed to create a computer based scoring system that looks identical to our existing system but automatically calculates race results and scores (Sailwave couldn’t cope with the idiosyncrasies of our scoring system).

The use of this system will enable us to post race result and series standings as they happen onto the club notice board and the web-site. But to do so we need as many people as possible to attend this training session. The system has been designed to be very intuitive and easy to use even for complete technophobes. But don’t worry, the paper score sheets will still be available for those who are nervous of the prospect of scoring on the computer. But we do want to make a gradual transition over the next season or so to a paperless system to reduce onerous double-entry.

Sunday 25th March @ 10.00am - The Spring Work Party

Bring gardening tools and cleaning products please. Help make your club a place of which you can be proud. Food will be provided at lunchtime.

Tuesday 27th March @ 19.00 - Assistant Duty Officer Training

This is a quick one hour run through for members who may be new to or a bit rusty in the practice of running races and safety boats for club racing. As we all have to do our Officer of the Day duty this is a gentle introduction. For those who were unable to attend the introduction to the new computerized scoring system, we may run the introduction again.

Saturday 31st March and Sunday 1st April @ 09.00 - RYA Powerboat training 1& 2

This course is very useful for anyone who intends to use the club powerboats for safety or towing purposes. In addition, it is a requirements to have this qualification to be a Dinghy Instructor. This 2 day course is open to all members at a cost of only £50.

Spring Sail Training at the TSC – Help desperately needed!

The start of the spring training is now only 5 weeks away and we are currently desperately short of helpers. If you can help out at all with safety boat cover, helping the students rig boats, with lunchtime bacon butties etc please let David know as soon as possible. We will need additional helpers on the Saturday 14th as this is not only the first session, but also the Firefly Open.

There are also still plenty of spaces available for training. In order to engage an appropriate number of instructors, the number of students needs to be known well in advance – which means NOW!

So now’s the time to contact friends or family who would be interested in learning to sail. Don’t delay!

For further details of all the options and opportunities to learn or help go to Training Programme.

Firefly Open - 14th April

We’re still looking for volunteers to help run this event. Kevin Pearson has kindly agreed to be race officer - further offers to help with all aspects of the event will be very gratefully received.

Firefly Open – Evening Party @ 20:00

The evening party featuring a disco from 8pm is open to the whole membership and guests with a small cover charge of £5 per head.

Catering at TSC – a message from the new Catering Chair

Having taken on the daunting task of following Phil and Kim Western , I need your help! In the first instance I have produced a questionnaire which I would like as many people as possible to complete, whether you presently eat at the club or not. This will hopefully give me some insight into what you want from the catering at the Club in the future. This questionnaire can either be filled in using the on-line catering survey or there will be some paper copies at the Club for completion. There will also be a box at the Club for your replies.

Secondly, I would like to hear from anyone (male or female!) who would be willing to help. This could be just once in the year collecting money, say, or helping with one of the special events like the summer party. Obviously the more people who help the less any one person has to do; so please sign up!

The social aspect of the Club is very important and it is through the hard work of the members themselves that social events are a success, so please lend a hand.

I look forward to receiving your completed questionnaires and your offers of support!

Many thanks

Gill Cryer
