Thames Sailing ClubCommodore’s Report
The commodore reported to the membership that we have had a very good year.
At the beginning of the season your committee set out three key objectives for the year. They were improvements to the social side of the club including food and bar, communicating with the membership and good sailing.
On the social side there have been some excellent parties. The two that stand out for me were the new members’ lunch at the beginning of the season and the award ceremony at the end. Traditionally these have been poorly attended over recent years, however, this year thanks to your committee they were full houses.
On the communication front, although we have had a few hiccups; this has improved substantially with the web site being maintained to a high standard and updated regularly. For small clubs with limited resources, web sites and e-mail is essential for communications. I apologise to members not on e-mail who have experienced problems receiving information. We continue to work on improvements to this. I recommend members who have not seen the web site recently, to log on and have a look.
The sailing season has been good with 16 raters at Bourne End, a record for recent times. Training continues at the club and thanks must go to David Lowrie and sally reed for masterminding this. Members should also know that sally received an RYAaward for her work, presented by princess ann. This season has seen Brian Hepbern, Phillip Spreadborough and Martin Grounds retire from rater sailing. On the plus side, we have seen many younger members joining our fleets.
Now turning to next season, i hope the membership has had time to read the planned future strategy document. This has the full support of your committee and we hope to have the support of the membership in implementing this.
In essence the club remains the same. The difference being we encourage and welcome vintage sailing dinghies. It also gives us the opportunity to market and promote the Thames as a vintage club which makes us different from other sailing clubs.
This season we plan to improve the entrance to the club. This will include essential repairs to the retaining walls, new signage and repairs to the car park surface. Our budget for this is £12,000. During the coming year your committee will continue to look at the long term objectives for the club.
Finally on your behalf I would like to thank all members of the club’s committee’s for all their work over the past year.
The budget approval for £12,000 for work on retaining walls, signage and repairs to the car park was proposed by Brian Hepburn, seconded Nick Hoskins and carried unanimously.
Hon. Treasurer’s Report
Profits are up on last year with a reasonable surplus of income over expenditure of £11.7K, although I don't think we can be complacent as a club about our earnings. There are some underlying trends that should not go unnoticed.
Although income is up on last year, (and is 26 % up on the 03/04 Financial year) this is driven largely by the Bar, which delivered a very satisfactory surplus of just over £9K. Subscriptions are down, although we have a higher activity rate of our members, shown by higher berthing fees. Donations provide a much needed injection, - the highlight being the Christmas Draw, which raised over £2k, but we must be aware that they cannot be relied upon
Major costs for last year were, re concreting - £2,200, remedial electrical work - £2,700.

Any Other Business
Ingrid pointed out that Thames Sailing club started dinghy racing through the use of centre boards, which allowed the dinghies to sail into the wind and should be promoted as part of the strategy.
The official policy of the club is that there is no obligatory fee for non attendance at working parties. The membership form will be reviewed by the General Committee and report back to the next AGM.
A big thanks for all those who worked in the box.
A thank you to Nick Hoskins for all his efforts throughout the year.
