Merlin Vintage Regatta 2007Ian and Susie

Of the fourteen craft Suzie Scotcher with Ian Pratt (or is it the other way round?), and Nick Hoskins with Suzanne represented Thames and the twelve visitors came from Minima, Hampton Court and Tamesis Club plus Richard Peats, a retired member.

The day was bright and the wind was occasionally sufficient for two crew to be on the same gunwale. The course was set round D below the island then up to A for the first race which proved plain sailing, with positions changing in the ‘standard’ variable Thames conditions. The second race proved more interesting and for some a disappointment. Race Officer Stuart Gurney decided that the course should change with again downstream start but over to the Surrey side of the island, round D, and up the Middx side to B which was on the Middx side opposite the Club. From B the competitors headed straight across the river, past the island, to the Club to C, and then up to A and back. However the new course included a change at the top mark from Port to Starboard and, regrettably, four or five boats played follow my leader the wrong way round. Those behind felt quite concerned! The fleet including Number 1!

The third race was over the same course as the second and again the potential finishing order changed throughout the race leading to much cursing and excitement as those behind overtook their nearest competitor.

It seemed that everyone enjoyed the sailing. Thanks were given to all those who supported the event be they in Cora, the race box, taking the entry fees and forms in the clubhouse or up in the car park first thing to welcome and organize what seemed at the time like a never ending flow of arrivals.

Particular thanks should also go to Hon Sailing Sec Suzie Scotcher without whom the event would not have happened. Despite all she maintained a sunny smile and air of confidence that represented Thames Sailing Club at is best.
